MSG Afrika Media announces Power FM launch date


Johannesburg, 05 June 2013 – MSG Afrika Media, a subsidiary of MSG Afrika Investment Holding, today announced the launch date of Power FM, a new Gauteng talk radio station that will go on air next week Tuesday (18 June 2013).



Power FM will be available on 98.7 FM. Licenced in December 2012, it will broadcast in Gauteng and surrounding areas.


The station’s aim is to be the most credible and trusted commercial talk radio station in South Africa. It is targeted at the majority of adult South Africans aged between 25 and 49, who are looking for a radio station that will reflect who they are and where they are come from.

“Power FM will not be your typical broadcaster,” says Given Mkhari, Power FM chairman and CEO of MSG Afrika Investment Holding.


He says the radio station is pro-South African, pro-development, optimistic and unapologetic.


“We intend to spotlight those conversations when we are in our private spaces but have previously been ignored by the public arena. Our aim is to fill a gap that exists in broadcasting and be a platform for engagement for those South Africans who want to see their lives improve and the country at work.”


To achieve this, Power FM has roped in some of South Africa’s most prominent and respected voices in radio today.


Understanding that it has a responsibility to also groom and nurture budding talent, listeners will be treated to a combination of the old and the new with an emphasis on quality broadcasting and entertainment.
“We are trying to appeal to scope of our target audience,” says Ferdinand Mabalane, Power FM Station Manager.
“It is very important that our line-up reflects that we understand our target market and know what it is they expect from us, and that is radio at its best.”

Listeners of Power FM can look forward to return of radio veterans Tim Modise and Lawrence Tlhabane, formerly Dube, who are certain to keep listeners captivated. Also making his come back to radio is Paul Mnisi, popularly known as Rude Boy T.


Lawrence will co-host the weekday breakfast show (6am – 9am) with award-wining business journalist and TV and radio presenter Siki Mgabadeli, who will also serve as Power FM Business Editor.


Broadcaster, columnist and author Eusebius McKazier, formerly with Talk Radio 702, will host the 9am-noon weekday slot, followed by Azania Mosaka, who will present the midday to 3pm show.


Thabiso Tema, commonly known “TT” in the broadcasting fraternity, will host the afternoon drive-time show (3pm-5pm) supported by the dynamic team of Tshidi Madea, Katlego Mogase, Jadene Tager, and Karabo Yibe.


Investment specialist and stockbroker, Owen Nkomo will bring provide the weekly dose of business news from 5pm-6pm, followed by a show hosted by renowned communication specialist and former journalist Chris Vick (6pm-7pm).


Seasoned media practitioner and winner of the 2012: On-Air Personality of the Year Award for TV Ikusasa Award, Masechaba Lekalake, will keep listeners entertained until 9pm. Taking the reins from there will be Tim Modise, who will host the 9pm- midnight show, handing over to Sunday Times columnist and author Ndumiso Ngcobo (midnight-3am). Ngcobo will be followed by the vivacious Asanda Magaqa (3am-6am).


The weekend line-up features the likes of Paul Mnisi who will host the morning show with Tumisang Ndlovu, the charming husband and wife team of Mio and Queenie Khondleka, Pabi Moloi, and renowned club DJ, DJ Franky to spice up the weekend.
